TV Is Not Your Neighbor

TV is not your neighbor and it should not be your God.

Luke 10:27: And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

Are you giving time and attention to the TV that you should be giving to real live people? Or worse yet, are you giving time and attention to the TV that you should be giving to the Lord? Am I? We try to avoid individuals who talk all the time and never listen. The TV has no ears but rabbit ears. Individuals tolerate its incessant babble for hours on end. I have talked to mine often but it has never heard me. The TV has never helped me shovel snow. It has never helped me get my car going. It has never loved me. It is unable to accept love even if we try to give it. It is a lousy substitute for a neighbor or for God.

I would like to call your attention to some coincidences that happened about the middle of the last century. American homes began to be flooded with TV sets. Americans became increasingly unfriendly neighbors. The Bible and prayer were kicked out of schools and work places. God and the Bible were increasingly excluded from lives, homes and government. America began sinking into a moral cesspool. We have not won a war against any form of tyranny. America has been filling up with violence just like the world before God destroyed it in the flood. Forgive me for calling them coincidences, they are not coincidences. They are the inevitable results of putting idols ahead of God. The final inevitability will be destruction of all those who put other things ahead of God.

Genesis 6:13: And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Only God can reverse these things for a nation. He did it for Israel many times. With His help, each Christian can reverse them in his or her own life.
